As the 1998 college football season wound down, the University of Nebraska was the dream team to planners of the Holiday Bowl game at Qualcomm Stadium. The Cornhuskers would mean a huge visitor turnout, it was thought — as many as 30,000 fans — as long as the Cotton Bowl didn’t exercise a prerogative to pre-empt the San Diego pick.
